Father’s Day “बुवाको मुख हेर्ने दिन”: FESTIVALS OF NEPAL | Ep. 13

Monday August 21st is Father’s Day “Kushe Aunchi” in Nepal.  Happy Father’s Day Everyone!

Here are some of my favorite Father’s Day quotes-

“A father is neither an anchor to hold us back nor a sail to take us there, but a guiding light whose love shows us the way.” Unknown

“My father gave me the greatest gift anyone could give another person. He believed in me.” Jim Valvano

“The quality of a father can be seen in the goals, dreams and aspirations he sets not only for himself, but for his family.” Reed Markham

Brief about Father’s Day in Hinduism:
Hindu scripture says Pitru Devo Bhawa “पितृदेवो भव” which literally means parents are god in human form. Hindu society teaches every children to treat their parents with love, respect, and appreciation. Nepalese call this day, “Buwaako Mukh Herne Din – बुवाको मुख हेर्ने दिन” which literally means a day for looking at father’s face.
How is it celebrated?
It’s a serious ritual for Nepalese. If father is alive, children visit him with sweets, clothing and favorite gifts to show respect and appreciation for their sacrifice.  In return, fathers give blessings to their children.

If one’s father is deceased, children perform Shraddha, a ceremony performed in honour of a dead ancestor at home, or go to Shiva temple at Gokarna, eastern part of Kathmandu, or Bishnupaduka in Sunsari.  In doing so an individual will turn into Punya Aatma “पुण्यात्मा”, a holy soul.

When?
Father’s Day generally falls in Bhadra month’s following the full moon or purnima, middle of month in Nepali calendar which is late August or early September, Bhardra aushi, no moon day.

What are other names?
Kushe Ausi, Pitri Tarpan Aausi or Gokarne Ausi.

Kush, a type of grass, is very important and considered holy; used in all types of Hindu rituals, occasions, praying, and pujas.  On this day, priests bring holy Kush to their patrons home and believers wear it as a ring before starting any religious work. Bringing Kush to home on this day is considered auspicious and believed to bring good luck for the rest of year.
