This Nepali children’s rhymes has been passed down from generation to generation. Every Nepali child remembers singing this during the Dashain festival using his/her five fingers. It is fun and in a way they learn about the fingers. While saying each line, kids point to a finger starting with the pinky and ends with the thumb.
Dashain Aayo Children’s Rhymes with Nepali and English lyrics, translation:
- Pinky (little) Finger says, “Dashain Aayo दशैं आयो – Dashain has come.”
- Ring Finger says with excitement, “Khaula Piula! खाउँला पिउँला! – Will eat and drink!”
- Middle Finger is not that that enthusiastic and asks, “Kahan Paula? कहाँ पाउँला? – Where will we get the food and drink?”
- Index Finger has a plan and says with confidence, “Chori Lyaula!! चोरी ल्याउँला!! – We will steal it!!”
- Thumb Finger says with disappointment, “Dhatta Papi Ma Ta Chuttai Basaula!!! धत् पापी म त छुट्टै बसौंला!!! – You are a sinner, I will stay away!!!”
What is Dashain? It is the biggest festival in Nepal. One of the biggest for Hindus from around the globe. It is also called Dashera, Navaratri. All businesses and schools are closed during this time. School kids get a month-long vacation during this time. Parents buy new pair of cloths, gifts and try to get together with relatives and old parents for Pujas and exchange of blessings. Dashain festival reminds us that the evil may be strong at a time but the truth, hard work and honesty will always prevail.
