जाउलो | Super Nutritious Nepali Baby Food | How to make Nepali Food Jaulo
This video will show you how to prepare a wildly popular and highly nutritious baby food from Nepal. It is called “Jaulo or Khichadi- जाउलो वा खिचडी” in its native language. This centuries old recipe is easy to make. You can prepare with or without spices, and customize the ingredients to suite your taste.
I am preparing this meal for my two-years old.
In comparison to processed baby foods from stores, homemade baby foods are very nutritious and fresh. Due to its high nutritional value, “Jaulo” is good for adults of any age and is also served to hospital patients in Nepal.
I have been preparing this delicious meal since my child turned eight months old.
Here are my Jaulo/Kichadi ingredients. Again, adjust per your taste or dish size.
- Mix of four lentils and a white rice.
• First one is Split Yellow Pigeon Peas (रहर दाल)
• Second, Split Yellow Mung Beans (पहेलो मुङ्ग दाल)
• Third, Split Green Mung Beans (हरियो मुङ्ग दाल)
• Lastly, Split Red Lentils (रातो मुसुरो दाल) - I have used Jasmine rice (सेतो ज्यास्मीन चामल), but you can substitute it with other fast cooking white rice.
• This mix of rice and lentils are about 1 whole cup (200 grams).
• After rinsing both rice and lentils, let them soak in 2 cups of warm water for about 3 to 4 hours.
Here are the vegetables for Jaulo (adjust per your taste):
- Broccoli (हरियो काउली): 3 oz
- Garlic: (लसुन): 3 cloves, crushed
- Ginger (अदुवा): 1 small piece, crushed
- Carrot (गाजर): 3 oz, shredded
- Green Sweet Peas (हरियो केराउ): 1 oz
- Spinach (हरियो साग): 2 oz
- Baby Bella Mushroom (च्याउ): 3 oz, chopped
- Potato (आलु): 1 medium sized, chopped
Here are the spices: - 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) Cumin Seeds (जिरा)
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) Fenugreek Seeds (मेथी)
- 1/2 teaspoon (2.5 ml) Turmeric Powder (बेसार)
- 1 tablespoon mix of Cumin and Coriander Powder (जिरा र धनियाको धुलो)
- Salt, according to your taste or 1/2 teaspoon (नून)
- 1 tablespoon Butter (नौनी)
- Lastly, 1 tablespoon Olive Oil (जैतूनको तेल)
- Clarified Butter (pure cow ghee: घ्यू)) is recommended. Today, I am using olive oil and butter as a substitute.
